CHAPTER 39

Thank you for coming, Mayor,” I said as she and her husband were ready to leave.

“Are you kidding? I wasn’t going to miss an opportunity to see this house,” she joked. “I’d love to come back in the spring. I can tell you have lovely gardens and two greenhouses that must make a show place.”

“It takes a village to do all this, as you know, Mayor, and I have a wonderful village that supports me,” I bragged. “You both have a very Merry Christmas!” Behind them followed good-byes from Sue and Devin, the Kaufmans, and the Littletons. They couldn’t have left merrier.

I was shutting the door against the cold when Jack approached me. “Thanks for a great evening, Anne,” he said as he put on his coat. “I have to say that some of these people here tonight, I’ve met at church. It was nice to see them in a social setting. I’m very glad I came.” I nodded without knowing how to respond. Why wasn’t he with Nancy and Richard?

“I’m glad you had a good time,” I said politely.

“Would you mind if I called you to have lunch one day?” he asked gently. “You have made this transition here in Colebridge very pleasant. I’d like to see more of you.” I knew I was looking at him in a peculiar way.

“I don’t know, Jack,” I said with hesitation looking away from him.

“Think about it,” he added. “I hope you and your family have a very Merry Christmas.”

“We hate to leave a good party, Anne,” voiced Richard joining us. “Thanks so very much. Nancy needs to get me out more often!”

“Yes, I do,” said Nancy as Richard helped her with her coat.

“I’m glad you all had a good time,” I said, kissing them both good-bye.

Jack gave me a wink and went out the door with them. Hmmm.
